Land more and let them grow. #FlingSomeBling

About Us:

Bling Fishing Co. was started by three friends with a passion for angling and conservation. When we aren’t out fishing, we volunteer with streamkeeper groups to help take care of our fish and our watersheds. After unfortunately gill, eye or brain spiking Rainbow and Bull trout while out fishing for Salmon, we looked for a way to use smaller hooks that could keep the bycatch safe.

We discovered using a short segment of braid and a smaller hook as a trailer, to protect the trout while keeping the hook point far enough back to get a good hook up. A bonus to the trailer hook was that the hook had nothing to bind up on like it does when using a siwash hook and split ring, and the hook shank can be shorter. This means that fish have a lot less leverage on the hook and that helps land more fish. Meanwhile, if you need to release the fish the smaller hook gives them the best chance to survive and go on to spawn. Don’t just take our word for it, it’s supported by science! Read about it here.

With the current cost of spoons from competitors, removing the pre-packaged hook and purchasing more hooks to make your own trailer hook spoons is deterring many anglers from using the right sized hooks to keep all fish safe. We sought to make trailer hooks spoons available to more anglers and provide a great value product without compromising on quality. We spent over a year developing and testing our spoons to ensure we had the best hardware that can perform under pressure!

    Please contact us at business@blingfishing.ca.

  • What is the benefit of the trailer hook?

The trailer hook virtually eliminates the leverage on the hook, keeping the fish pinned on the end of your line. It also allows the use of a smaller hook so that smaller bycatch can be released safely. It's backed by science!

  • Are your hooks barbless?

The hooks on our pre-assembled spoons and trailer hooks are pre-pinched to debarb them making them “ready to fish” (It is the responsibility of the angler to ensure that their equipment complies with the regulations, including ensuring barbs are pinched sufficiently where barbless hooks are required). Our packs of loose hooks are barbed.

  • Where are Bling spoons made?

Bling spoons are hand assembled by us here in Vancouver, BC using globally sourced components.

  • How do you fish Bling spoons?

You can fish Bling spoons in many ways!
To start out with, we recommend a 7 to 9 ft. medium power spinning rod, rated for 8-15 lb. line, with a moderate-fast to extra-fast action. If using heavier braid as mainline, we recommend using a leader of no more than 15 lb. mono or fluoro tied to the spoon. For the vast majority of salmon, 12 lb. leader is sufficient, but be sure to check the leader for nicks and abrasion periodically and change when it doesn’t feel smooth.

Here are some fishing techniques we recommend trying:
    1) Swinging:
Look for water that is somewhere between walking and running speed. Cast across the run at about 10 degrees down stream, close the bail when the spoon hits the water and pick up the slack line. Keep the rod tip up (not vertical but approximately to eye level) and let the spoon sink and drift with the current until you feel the bottom, then give a light jig to pop the spoon off the bottom and allow the current to swing the spoon into the bank and impart action. Watch the rod tip for the rhythmic bouncing of the spoon thumping in the current and set on any abnormal deflections of the tip. Often when swinging, the fish will set themselves on the hook, so this is a beginner friendly method. Remember if you aren’t ticking bottom, you aren’t fishing deep enough.

    2) Cast and retrieve
It’s as straightforward as that, cast out the spoon, let it sink, then reel back in. Vary the time you let the spoon sink to cover different depths and change up the retrieve speed to keep up with the current. You can also slow down your retrieve to entice lazy fish or speed up the retrieve to trigger aggressive fish to bite. This technique works great for rivers or lakes and allows you to cover different depths to target fish near the surface or hugging the bottom.

    3) Vertical jigging
Our 10g Bling spoons are perfect for vertical jigging for kokanee and rainbow trout from a boat or through the ice! Simply drop the spoon to the bottom, reel it up to suspend the spoon about 2 ft. off the bottom, then lift the rod 2-3 ft. then drop the tip to let the spoon drop back down and flutter to drive the fish wild. If you have sonar, jig right where you are marking fish making bigger jigs to draw in fish and smaller jigs when they are near to entice them to bite. If you do not have a sonar, do 5-10 slow jigs starting 2 ft. off the bottom, reel up 2 turns of the handle and do 5-10 slow jigs, and repeat until the spoon is retrieved, then drop back down to 2 ft. off the bottom and repeat all over again to cover the entire water column. Keep an eye on your rod tip and line as bites usually occur on the drop, look for the tip to bounce up or the line to fall slower than expected.

    4) As an ice fishing flasher/sinker
Need a way to draw in fish and get your bait/lure deep? Remove the hook from your 10 or 15g Bling spoon and tie the spoon inline on your ice rod, followed by a 6-12 inch segment of leader to your hook and bait (we recommend reusing the hook and crimping a small split shot just above or using a 1/16oz. or smaller jig head, for bait night crawlers or small pieces of shrimp work great). Now follow the same jigging procedure as vertical jigging.
